Press Release: Bishop-Wisecarver Continues Long-Term Commitment to STEM Education with Twelve Years as FIRST Robotics Sponsor

Linear Motion Manufacturer Supports Academic and Critical Thinking Skills as 2019 National Diamond Supplier and Sponsor of Multiple Regional Teams

Pittsburg, Calif. – February 12, 2019 – Bishop-Wisecarver, a trusted industrial automation company offering proven motion solutions that are expertly designed and delivered to perform, today announced its continued commitment to support STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education through its long-term sponsorship of the FIRST® Robotics Competition (FRC) programs. In 2019, Bishop-Wisecarver (BW) is a Diamond Supplier at the national level and supports three regional teams who will experience the importance of innovation and collaboration, while also learning academic and problem-solving skills.

“Sponsoring the FIRST program is something every manufacturer can, and should, do to help promote the educational and critical thinking skills needed to encourage new employees in our industry,” said Pamela Kan, President of Bishop-Wisecarver. “No matter our company size, the efforts we each make here will impact the number and quality of future employees throughout the manufacturing industry. It is so impressive to see the students push hard to learn new programming and designing skills in the building phase, and then problem solve as a team during the unexpected challenges that occur during the competitions. This is real world training at its best and it can bring strong candidates to our companies.”

FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was founded in 1989 to inspire an appreciation of science and technology in young people and now includes several different competitions for various age groups and interests. The 2019 FIRST programs will include more than 3,700 teams with 100,000 youth team members from around the globe.

As a select Diamond Supplier, BW has donated MadeWell® radial wheels and crown rollers for the 2019 FRC competition that allow students to use vee groove wheel bearings on 90-degree vee track to create high load capacity linear guides. These products are offered to all teams who then have a limited time to design, build and program their robots for this season’s DESTINATION: DEEP SPACE challenge and competitions.

In addition to being a Diamond Supplier, BW is sponsoring three California-based FIRST teams to help fund their projects and travel to regional competitions:

Jackson Korsgaard and Catalina Vera, student members of the 2018 Pirate Robolution Crew, said their FIRST experience taught them how to be resourceful and the value of teamwork. “Whenever a new challenge appeared, our team was able to find solutions that often involved applying ideas shaped by our team members to the issue at hand.”
