UtiliTrak® – Compact Linear Guide

UtiliTrak is an ideal choice for running two systems in parallel, where one slide uses DualVee guide wheels and the other uses MadeWell® crowned rollers. Because precise parallelism is difficult to achieve, it is not uncommon for mounting surfaces to be slightly out of parallel. UtiliTrak's design compensates for mounting errors, and does not require absolute parallelism for accurate operation. The DualVee guide wheel plate assembly and vee channel serves as the motion side, while the MadeWell crowned roller and open channel side allows for parallel misalignment.

Stainless steel composite UtiliTrak is a great option for high load requirements where carbon steel cannot be used due to corrosion requirements.

Wheel Plate Assemblies

The two outside guide wheels are concentric, while the center wheel(s) are eccentric. Fit up is pre-set at the factory, but is easily adjusted by rotating the eccentrically mounted center guide wheels. This allows modification of running characteristics such as drag, breakaway force and running friction.

Each assembly includes a standard lubricator, which distributes a light coat of oil along the length of the channel during normal operation. Lubrication of the channel increases load, life and speed capacities.

Bridge Connections

Two types of bridge connection are available. The steel version is available in a variety of widths, and features mounting holes according to customer specifications. The aluminum version features MCS profile extrusions with T-slots for ease of mounting.

Brake Option

The UtiliTrak brake system permits the wheel plate on any PW or SW series UtiliTrak to be manually locked at any user-selected position on the UtiliTrak rail. The brake system can be easily installed by the end user on existing UtiliTrak systems, or pre-assembled at the factory on new systems.

The brake system consists of a brake block, mounting hardware, and a threaded stud handle with an adjustable handle arm. The brake block is made from aluminum and is hard anodized for long-lasting life and increased holding force. The handle has a plastic arm and a black-anodized steel stud. The mounting hardware is made from stainless steel.

The brake block mounts to either end of the UtiliTrak wheel plate and has a pair of brake arms that straddle the UtiliTrak rail. Each wheel plate can accommodate two brake systems. The brake system is engaged by turning the handle arm clockwise, which causes the brake arms of the block to clamp the rail. Disengage the system by simply turning the handle arm counter-clockwise.

The angular position of the handle arm can be adjusted which permits the brake system to be more compact in applications where access to the handle arm is limited. It also permits the handle to be set at any desired positon without affecting the brake engagement status and amount of braking force.

Can assembled CR composite channels be supplied to a custom length?

Yes, Bishop-Wisecarver can supply custom lengths of CR composite channel. Bishop-Wisecarver recommends against the end user cutting their own lengths. Due to the different properties of stainless steel and aluminum, saws may have difficulties cutting both materials at once.
 

Can UtiliTrak be used in a clean room?

UtiliTrak has not been certified to a clean room level, but the composite CR system can be supplied with either clean room or vacuum grade lubricants such as Krytox or Braycoyte.
 

How do I calculate end hole spacing for UtiliTrak channel?

 

What types of applications are UtiliTrak suited for?

Designed primarily for transport type applications, UtiliTrak is intended for use where load capacity, stiffness, and positional accuracy are less demanding than machine tool grade applications. UtiliTrak offers a low cost alternative to square rail recirculating element technologies, which often require a significant amount of surface preparation, adding substantially to the total installed cost.
 

What is the design philosophy behind UtiliTrak?

UtiliTrak is constructed with DualVee Motion Technology, built into 3, 4 and 5 wheel carriages. These carriages are mounted in-line and roll along (and are captured within) the UtiliTrak channel. The carriages incorporate both eccentric and concentric studded integral guide wheels. By using concentric and properly adjusted eccentric wheels, all axial play (both vertical and horizontal) can be eliminated. Fit up is pre-set at the factory, but is easily field adjusted by rotating the eccentrically mounted center guide wheels. This allows modification of running characteristics such as drag, breakaway, and preload.In addition, large stud thread diameters accommodate high installation torques, ensuring the wheels keep their adjusted preload value despite vibration.
 

Is the orientation of UtiliTrak assembly important?

The UtiliTrak vee assembly can be employed to accept loads in all orientations. However, it is primarily intended to support loads in the radial plane. As such, it is good engineering practice to orient the guide so that the two outside wheels (concentric) support the load radially. Each carriage assembly includes an arrow pointing toward the optimal direction of load orientation. Loads oriented in this direction will produce optimal load on each of the concentrically mounted guide wheels.
