Q: As the Captain, you have probably been involved with FIRST for multiple years. What do you like about the program and what skills have you gained from participating?
AO:
This is my third year as a member of the Fembots and what I especially like about this program is that I can share these interests with students I otherwise would probably not have connected with. The FIRST program provides teenagers who are 1-4 years away from adulthood with a highly interactive and influential program that could pave the way to potential and stable career options. This program has provided me with a mock layout field to practice my managing skills, side by side with passing on information to my programming peers.

Q: What are some of the challenges you (or your team) have faced this season?
AO:
Our greatest obstacle this year was change of coaches, along with the graduation of our team seniors. Losing these members meant we lost the experience and skills they had taken with them. But, we are making progress this year. Thanks to our dedicated veterans and new coaches we will be able to present ourselves to the best of our ability this year.

Q: What are your future career plans and how do you think FIRST has prepared you?
AO:
I plan to pursue a career in the field of programming. FIRST has prepared me to think in a 3D perspective. As a programmer, I have to imagine how certain parts are supposed to function and then I have to implement them into code. It’s like translating from one language to another. I find this skill essential as a programmer because I have to imagine and draw out whatever I plan to write into code.

Q: What aspects of FIRST Robotics Competition is your team most excited about and why?
AO:
We are most excited about the actual competitions. We have a lot of rookies this year who have never experienced anything like a robotics competition before. Usually the adrenaline for our team really begins once we arrive at competition. I plan to be managing a lot of last minute stress over scouting and prepping, but I expect excitement to captivate everyone’s attention during competition.
