Quality Engineer / Quality Lead

Bishop-Wisecarver Group (BWG) has an opening for Quality Engineer/ Quality Lead at our Pittsburg, CA location. Quality assurance (QA)/quality control (QC) engineers are responsible for ensuring the quality of products and services produced by their company. They oversee the manufacturing of products and they are involved in every stage of making a product—from development and manufacturing to packaging. The quality engineer collaborates with other engineering groups (e.g. manufacturing engineering, design engineering) to develop products and manufacturing processes. The quality engineer with establish inspection plans and define appraisal methods to ensure product quality. As the quality lead, this person will assume lead auditor responsibility and act as the company liaison during audits of the quality system. The quality engineer reviews and analyzes inspection data to find quality problems the department or company is experiencing. The analysis provides information on the particular defects to be addressed. Working with engineering and production personnel, the quality engineer interprets process data and contributes to issue resolution and process improvements.

Responsibilities:

  • Quality Engineering and Analysis 60%
    • Participates in product design and design review activities to ensure products are designed for manufacturability.
    • Works with engineering and production to develop control plans for manufactured goods and processes.
    • Performs audits of the production systems to ensure processes are in control and yield quality products with a focus on minimizing or eliminating waste and loss.
    • May initiate line stops and participate or lead actions to correct identified issues.
    • Develops CMM inspection routines for part validation from native CAD models.
    • Perform mechanical testing and analysis of results on in-process product, finished product and incoming supplier product.
    • Conducts routine and non-routine physical dimensional measurement testing using test equipment such as: optical comparators, gage blocks, pin gages, dial indicators, calipers, micrometers, coordinate measuring machines (CMM), etc.
    • Directs calibration program, calibrates test equipment within capabilities and manages off-site calibration activities.
    • Reviews and recommends changes to the Quality Management System and associated documents.
    • Updates or develops standard operating procedures/standard work for the quality and production groups.
    • Uses or modifies approved testing methods to record data, make observations and conclusions.
    • Develops new testing methods or software programs to evaluate the quality of products.
    • Reviews and recommends disposition of non-conforming material through RMA process.
    • Initiates and manages CAPA / SCAR processes.
    • May perform non-routine testing under the guidance from engineering or production.
    • Prepares reports detailing performance against defined key metrics.
    • Performs work in compliance with defined quality system and AS9100 / ISO standards.
    • Creates and maintains quality documentation and test results per defined procedures.
    • Schedules all quality department testing coordinating with the needs of other departments.
    • Able to interface with all departments including: production, materials, customer service, finance and engineering.

  • Quality Auditor 30%
    • Understands industry standards such as AS9100, ISO9001:2008, ISO19011
    • Understands and conducts internal production/process and manufacturing quality control audits and risk assessments.
    • Prepares audit plans and understands the specific issues to be evaluated.
    • Executes internal audits within established manufacturing and production controls to ensure compliance with in-house and external specifications and standards such as AS9100 / ISO9001:2008.
    • Develops formal written reports to communicate audit results to management and/or regulatory compliance agencies making recommendations as appropriate.
    • Acts as company liaison to external auditors during on-site visits.
    • May conduct vendor evaluation audits to determine qualifications.
    • Supervises the Quality Analyst

  • Continuous Improvement and other 10%
    • Understands and uses LEAN methodology, waste reduction, Kaizen tools, roles and responsibilities.
    • Drives continuous improvement in company operations.
    • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Education:
    • Engineering degree or equivalent certification by a professional body such as ASQ (e.g. CQE – Certified Quality Engineer).
  • Experience:
    • 3-5 years of relevant experience, preferably in a manufacturing setting
    • Experience in designing and documenting formal test procedures
    • Operational experience in an AS9100 / ISO certified environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a focus on technical writing.
  • Experience in implementation and interpretation of dimensional control schemes, specifically GD&T.
  • Experienced in the use of CAD software (e.g. Solidworks, ProEngineer, AutoCAD, etc.)
  • Experienced in the use of statistical control methods (e.g. SPC)
  • Experience in the use of software for statistical control and analysis (e.g. Minitab, Excel, other).
  • Intermediate to expert use of current Microsoft suite of products (e.g. Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Relevant experience managing CAPA/SCAR processes.
  • Experienced in the use of continuous improvement tools is preferred (e.g. kaizen, 5S’, 5Why’s, standard work, etc.)
  • Competencies:
    • Able to interface with all departments including: production, materials, customer service, finance and engineering.
    • Team attitude; eager to cooperate with others with exceptional interpersonal communication skills.
    • Ability to change direction and handle multiple responsibilities and tasks on a regular basis.
    • Ability to positively motivate individuals and teams to meet or exceed project expectations
